About Crows and Wyverns:
A young queen’s peaceful reign ends and she must take up the sword to put things right and ensure the future of her people.
Kersey’s queen wants only to provide security and an heir to her throne. The northern wyverns’ coven warns against the queen’s plans. They’ve uncovered trouble in the south. Trouble that threatens the enlightened realms and the wyverns themselves. Only Queen Darie’s commitment, swift action, and self-sacrifice can save them.
In S.L. Wilton’s Crows and Wyverns, the sequel to his debut novel, Queen of Crows, we discover a mythical power at work in the world. Will this power be friend or foe?
SL Wilton’s Bookcamp Success Story, on writing and publishing and attending Novel Bookcamp:
Having been in a couple different critique groups while working on more than one novel idea, it dawned on me I was getting a lot of the same feedback from piece to piece. I decided I needed some fresh eyes and perspectives to help me improve my writing skills. I caught a post by NIP on Facebook and after some thought and plenty of doubt, submitted my novel. I was accepted, which was encouraging. So, with much trepidation about being thrust among strangers, I attended the book camp in 2018. I have returned each year since, with the 2020 Covid canceled camp the exception.
I don’t think my writing, at the sentence level, changed all that much as a result of camp. What did change was how I structured a story. The camp’s focus on the three act system helped me create a much better narrative as well as a more engaging story.
My main take-away from camp was no matter how experienced the writer is, we all struggle at some point in the process. The key is to keep going. Keep trying to improve. It will come together at some point as long as you don’t give up. I also came to realize there is no one writing process to follow. The writer must develop what works for them and call that their process.
I queried my debut novel a little. Not as much as I was advised to. I got ghosted by most of the agents I reached out to. I can take rejection, but I really hate being ignored. So, I decided to go with a hybrid publisher for my debut. That went reasonably well. For my second novel I skipped the query process. I hired a company to format and produce cover art etc. I did most of the editing myself and I think the book is pretty good. Most of all, it brings the Kersey saga to a close. I think.
I can’t recommend Novel in Progress Book Camp and Writing Retreat enough. I talk about it at every signing/reading I do. I encourage every writer I meet to take a look at it and urge them to attend. As one of my friends said, “It’s an investment in yourself.” It’s well worth the investment.
