Two Scholarships Offered to Attend the 2021 NIP Bookcamps

Novel Bookcamp Scholarships

WEST BEND, WI – For 2021, two $300 Philip N. Martin Bookcamp Scholarships will be awarded to first-time writers enrolled the Novel-In-Progress Bookcamps, the nonprofit educational organization announced.

The decision to double the number of scholarships awarded each year coincides with the NIP Board of Directors’ decision in June to run two NIP programs starting next year, explained Dave Rank, NIP director. The eighth annual All-Genre NIP Bookcamp workshop and Writing Retreat will be held May 23-29, 2021. A new NIP specifically for writers in the Speculative Fiction genres is scheduled for August 1-7, 2021.

Members of the Chicago Writers Association, Off Campus Writers’ Workshop, and the Wisconsin Writers Association receive an initial discount when applying for either a Bookcamp workshop or Writing Retreat.

Established in 2019, the Philip N. Martin Bookcamp Scholarship pays $300 of the registration fee to enroll in the NIP Bookcamp work. Only first-time Bookcamp applicants are eligible. “In 2020, our first Martin Bookcamp Scholarship winner was Lauren Lacey, an associate professor of English at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin,” Rank said. “Unfortunately, because of Covid-19 concerns, we canceled our 2020 NIP. So Lauren will attend our 2021 workshop along with our second scholarship recipient.”

These scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. The recipient is responsible for the balance of the registration fee, which covers Bookcamp expenses, six nights accommodations, and all meals.

The Philip N. Martin NIP Bookcamp Scholarship is open to any writer working in any genre planning to enroll in either the All-Genre or Speculative Fiction Bookcamp workshop for the first time. An applicant must be working on a book-length fiction or creative nonfiction project when applying. A completed manuscript is not necessary; the NIP staff works with writers at any stage of the creative process from initial story idea development to a completed first draft.
The scholarship program was established to honor the memory of Philip Nevin Martin, a talented author and editor, and lead instructor for the first five years of the Novel-In-Progress Bookcamp & Writing Retreat. He died at age 65 on March 3, 2019 of cancer.

Deadlines to apply for the scholarships are March 10, 2021 for the All-Genre NIP Bookcamp, and June 1, 2021 for the Speculative Fiction NIP Bookcamp.
