Wisconsin Writers Association funds $500 Grants to attend NIP Bookcamps

Two members of the Wisconsin Writers Association will receive financial assistance to attend the Novel-In-Progress Bookcamps in 2021, thanks to a WWA Board decision in August.

WWA Board Chairman Barry Wightman said the nonprofit organization’s Board of Directors voted to create a $1,000 fund divided into two $500 grants. Each grant will partially pay the enrollment fee for qualifying WWA members to attend the two NIP Bookcamp, six-day writing workshops scheduled for May and August in 2021.

The eighth annual NIP All-Genre Bookcamp will be held May 23-29, 2021, while the new Speculative Fiction Genres workshop is scheduled for August 1-7, 2021. Grant payment will be in the form of a deduction or reimbursement check. Only first-time Bookcamp applicants from the WWA are eligible, Wightman explained.

The WWA NIP Bookcamp Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis. Deadlines to apply for each of the WWA NIP Bookcamp Grants are January 15, 2021 for the All-Genre Bookcamp, and April 15, 2021 for the Speculative Fiction Bookcamp.

“We’re happy to offer these grants to assist members in advancing their writing skills education and improving their book-length works-in-progress,” Wightman said. “The residential Bookcamp workshops offer exceptional opportunities to do just that.”

“It’s an honor for us to have the WWA provide this wonderful support for our programs,” said NIP Director Dave Rank. “Each Bookcamp workshop is led by professional and award-winning novelists, professional book editors, and literary agents.”

The May All-Genre Bookcamp is open to any writer of a book-length fiction or creative nonfiction WIP, the NIP director said. “Our new Speculative Fiction Bookcamp in August is designed for writers of Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, and related genres,” he said. Each WWA grant covers about 38 percent of the Bookcamp enrollment fee, which includes program expenses, private overnight accommodations, and all meals during the six-day NIP, Rank said.
